Slot’s Toughest Season
The Dutchman acknowledged this has been the most challenging campaign of his managerial career.
“By a mile,” he said when asked if it was his most difficult season. “Because all the other seasons I've managed, there were only positives. I don't think I've ever lost two games in a row before.”
“It’s an exception this season for me, as it is for the players. The players are not used to losing a lot or having a lot of draws.”
“It is different from the other seasons I've managed, where we always did something special — and there's still the possibility that we can do something special this season as well.”
Despite delivering the Premier League title last term, Slot now finds himself under scrutiny — particularly after a reported £450m summer spend that raised expectations significantly.
Carragher: “A Long Way Back”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was blunt in his assessment of Liverpool’s top-five hopes.
When asked whether he expects Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League — with the Premier League’s qualification spots set to expand from four to five — Carragher replied:
“No. Right now, I don't.”
“They would have to have a huge upturn in form. And the ones above them are in great form.”
“When you look at the league for Liverpool, it looks like a long road ahead to get into the top five Champions League positions. There's a gap now.”
Carragher also questioned the structure of the team.
“The manager has another decision to make on the front four,” he added. “If Liverpool continue the way they are, with games end to end, I just don't see how they can make the Champions League positions.”
“But no matter what Arne Slot does, the make-up of this squad and team isn't right. It never looks stable. They are never in control.”
He concluded that cup competitions may now represent Liverpool’s best chance to salvage the season.
Neville: “Box It Up and Move On”
Gary Neville, meanwhile, offered a more optimistic perspective — though he acknowledged the mental test ahead.
“They're now four points behind the top five,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast. “That's not a big gap at all, and there's a long way to go.”
“They’ll have to play most of the teams above them, so they've still got loads of opportunities.”
However, Neville admitted there is still uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s trajectory.
“There is a question mark over Liverpool. I still think they will [qualify], but what they have to do is box that defeat up very quickly and chuck it in a corner.”
“They need to compose themselves. They need to pull themselves together.”
Neville pointed to the experience within the squad — Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch — as key to navigating the run-in.
“Can they hold it together? Can they get back on the bike?”
He added that Liverpool’s upcoming trip to Sunderland represents an immediate opportunity to respond.
“Go and win there if you really want to tell everybody that you're still going to be in the Champions League.”
“Win there emphatically. Be professional. Keep a clean sheet. That’s where everyone needs to look now for Liverpool.”
With expectations high and momentum slipping, Liverpool’s season now hangs in the balance. For Slot, qualification may not officially determine his future — but the pressure is undeniably building.
